M: What gate is your flight leaving from?

W: Gate 38.

M: And what’s the flight number?

W: NH 953.

Text 2

M: Would you mind turning down the TV?

W: Pardon? I can’t hear you.

M: Would you mind turning down the TV? I’m answering the phone.

W: Not at all.

Text 3

W: Honey, I need a new pair of shoes.

M: Shoes? Maybe we’ll need to buy another cupboard, too.

W: I know, but I have no shoes to match my new dress.

Text 4

M: We don’t have to hurry. The train will leave in an hour and a half.

W: But it’s already nine o’clock and it’ll take us an hour to get to the station.

Text 5

M: Hello, I was hoping to exchange a gift I received. This T-shirt is too big for me. Do you have it in a smaller size?

W: Unfortunately, we do not have it in that color. We have it in a smaller size, but only in blue, not black.

Text 6

W: Excuse me, Mr Johnson. I’m wondering if I can ask your advice about my school paper.

M: Oh, your paper! Why not drop by my house and we can talk about it?

W: Great! But when?

M: You see, your class ends at 3:00. Well… stop over on your way home from school then. All right?

W: Oh, yes. Thank you very much.

Text 7

W: Dr Clinton, when did you have the idea of helping cancer patients?

M: Actually, I didn’t have any idea when I left high school at the age of 16. Then I found a job in a small medical lab. I never dreamed I would help save people’s lives.

W: Then what caused your change?

M: I love lab work, so I went back to school. After ten years, I got my PhD. Then I worked at a medical company, where I began the research on a medicine to treat lung cancer patients. Now I have been here for 8 years. For me, a drug saves more than life. It can save a family.

W: I couldn’t agree more with you.

Text 8

W: Henry, are you going to Mandy’s party or to the cinema tonight?

M: Neither, I’m going to stay at home and study. My final exam is coming up next week.

W: Is it going to be difficult?

M: It will be harder than the mid-term exam. I’m sure.

W: Was that one difficult?

M: It was the most difficult exam I’ve ever had.

W: Then maybe this one will be easier.

M: Well, I’m going to spend more time studying for it than I did for the mid-term exam.

W: What are you going to do after the exam?

M: I don’t know. Maybe I’ll look for a better job.

W: What’s the matter with this job?

M: It isn’t the worst job in the world, but it isn’t the best job, either.

W: Do you want to work for a bigger company?

M: I want to get ahead. I want to make more money.

Text 9

W: Hello, Ben. You are getting ready for tomorrow’s lessons, aren’t you?

M: Yes. I’m a bit nervous. I have no idea what’ll happen in class and how I’ll get along with my classmates.

W: I understand how you’re feeling. Just take it easy. You’ll make a lot of new friends very soon.

M: Thank you. I’ll try my best to get used to my new school life as soon as possible. By the way, what time does the first class begin?

W: At 8 o’clock. But before that we have 5 minutes to hand in homework and then 15 minutes for morning reading.

M: So we must get to school before 7:40, right?

W: Right.

M: How long does each class last?

W: 45 minutes, I think, with a 10 minutes’ break.

M: Well, I hear that lunchtime is nearly 12 o’clock and I’ll be starving by then.

W: Don’t worry. During the break after the second class we can buy something to eat.

M: That’s good.

Text 10

Hello, everybody. I’m Teresa Stone. I’m so glad to meet you here. Today I’m going to share my travelling experience with you.

As a photographer, I have always loved to travel. The first place I visited was Africa. I loved the excitement of seeing animals run freely in the wild. It was so much fun. I still remember the adventure of camping when I was on Safari. Besides Africa, I have visited many other lands, such as Spain, Italy, Scotland, Japan and Thailand. People often ask me why I love to travel. How couldn’t anyone love travelling? There is such an attraction in seeing new things, meeting new people and tasting new foods. However, I will admit travelling is very expensive. There are so many costs of travelling. I have to pay for the hotel room and food. In addition, tourist attractions are usually expensive. Although I complain about the high cost of travelling, I wouldn’t choose to spend my money any other ways.
