Unit 1 Review
Text 1
M: Linda, you are traveling to New York this Saturday?
W: No, there were no flight tickets for Oct. 20, so I booked a ticket for Oct. 21.
Text 2
W: Now two magazines, four books.
M: How long can I keep them?
W: Magazines, only two weeks. And books, you can keep them as long as two months.
Text 3
M: I like your new book, especially the ending.
W: Thanks. I’m happy that it sells well. I hope it will be adapted for a movie.
Text 4
W: I went to my hometown this summer and I met a lot of my friends. Where did you go?
M: I went to my hometown, too. But I didn’t visit my friends. I visited my primary school teacher.
Text 5
W: How is your research going?
M: Well, not bad. I collected some information about it. And now I’ve got to talk to some students and get their opinions.
Text 6
M: Ava, I heard you won the top prize of a short story competition last week. Congratulations!
W: Thanks.
M: What is your story about?
W: It’s about a goose chick. There’s something wrong with his left foot, which makes him walk in a funny way and he has trouble in swimming well. But he manages to overcome this problem and learns to swim as well as others. Anyway, it is by no means a heartbreaking story.
M: So why did you write the story?
W: I want people who read it to get encouraged and try to overcome their own problems.
Text 7
M: It’s too hot, without a breath of wind. When’s it going to end?
W: What are you talking about? It’s nice! Do you want it to be cold and grey again? Why don’t we go to the beach for the day? We can sunbathe, swim a little…
M: Absolutely not! I can’t stand lying in the sun. I get sweaty and then sand sticks to me.
W: So what are you going to do? Sit inside all day?
M: Let’s go somewhere where it’s cool inside. We could go ice skating.
W: No way! I’m not wasting a nice day like this. You go ahead, but I’m going out.
Text 8
W: Good morning! Welcome to the office.
M: Thank you. I’m excited to be here and learn more about the new job position.
W: Let’s begin the interview. Can you tell me about your journalism experience and the job role now?
M: I started at a local newspaper four years ago. One year later, I began to write public interest stories as an editor, and then we started to explore the social media, so I took charge of several media accounts that linked to our website in the past two years.
W: Why do you want to work for this company?
M: First of all, I think it’s a great company with a fantastic reputation. I want to focus specifically on creating the media rather than writing.
W: That’s all I need to know for now. Be in touch before the end of the week. Thanks for coming today.
Text 9
W: Gordon, I’m going to Keswick in the Lake District this weekend.
M: Really?
W: Yeah, five of us. Why don’t you join us? We’re getting to Keswick on Friday. Then we’re going boating on Saturday. And on Sunday, we’re going to do some shopping. Then I will take some time to visit my aunt Lucy.
M: You’re not going to camp, are you? Isn’t it a bit cold?
W: No, we’re not. It is a bit cold. We’re staying in a country inn. It’s not like five-star hotels or anything. But it’s really comfortable.
M: Hmm, sounds interesting. You know, it’s the boating that I don’t like.
W: Well, what are you up to?
M: Sit on my sofa all weekend and watch the DVDs I’ve just bought. And that will be a busy weekend. I may finish watching Friends.
W: I don’t know how you can do that all weekend, Gordon. I’d get bored.
M: I know, I know. But that’s really what I want to do.
Text 10
Good morning, everyone. It’s my pleasure to talk about the school magazine. We’re going to print it in December, so send in your articles and pictures by the end of October. We’ve already got some good things, especially photos of school life. Keep those coming and we’ll choose the best for the center page. We’ve got enough jokes, all brilliant and funny, so don’t send us any more please. If you’re an artist, please send us a drawing or painting. Everybody says the diary page of the magazine is useful, so we need all the information we can get. We’ve got a list of all the concerts and the school dances. Send me an email or a text message if you’re organizing parties or any other events. Of course, the sports page is always students’ favorite. Almost everyone loves it. We do well in football and basketball. We win most of our matches, so there’s a lot of space given to them. But this summer our tennis team came home with a cup from a national competition, so please will a team member write something about it? OK, that’s all. Thank you.

Text 1
W: I suppose you’ll be ordering a coffee or an iced tea again.
M: Actually, I’m going to have something different today. They have wonderful milk shakes here, and I’ll have a strawberry one.
