One possible version:

“Just one small step at a time,” Dad encouraged me. “We need to keep moving.” “I can’t,” I insisted. “You can. Just take one small step at a time. Keep your eyes focused on your feet and on me.” Dad held my hands tightly as he continued to encourage me. “Just one small step at a time,” Dad repeated as we climbed together. Some of my steps were so small that we hardly moved at all, but I believed in the power in his words.

Eventually, we made it to the peak. Standing on the peak, I saw a range of snow-covered hills beneath. A wave of immediate excitement welled up in my heart, howling winds also cheering for us. “We make it!” I shouted crazily, hugging my dad tightly, big tears rolling down my cheeks. Years have passed since that mountain climbing, but Dad’s words have continued to be a life reminder for me—“Just one small step at a time” will get me wherever I want to be.

One possible version:

I picked up another letter and read it. “Son, I’m really proud of you every day, every minute, and every second.” It began as my glasses were fogged up. After I read all the letters, tears rushed out of my eyes. I was touched by my dad’s deep love for me and felt so regretful about not valuing it! Before long, I packed my things and went to the airport to meet my dad after so many years. “Will he be happy to see me? How will I face him?” I wondered.

Finally, I arrived at my dad’s house and saw him sitting alone in the yard. He looked up and rose in surprise and delight as my shadow was cast upon him from behind. He hugged me and cried before I could even greet him. “I’ve been waiting for your coming every single day, son!” he wept on my shoulder. I quit the job in California and lived with my dad. I realized money isn’t everything. It cannot buy things as precious as love and family.

After thinking about it long and hard, the boy went home and asked his father what he should do. Staring at the puzzled boy with a slight smile, his father said, “My boy, I know it is a very important decision for you. Just follow your heart, and you will make the right choice.” Nodding slowly, the boy lost himself in thought. After sitting with it for a whole day, the boy finally turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Twenty years passed and last summer, Ms Green brought 30 kids to camp out on Monty’s ranch for a week. The kids had a wonderful time in the vast ranch. They rode horses, admired the beautiful buildings, even played games in the big house. Before leaving, Ms Green apologized to Monty, “Sorry! As your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer.” She said with shame, “Fortunately you had enough courage to hold on to your dream.” Monty smiled, saying, “Ms Green, it is just the F that encourages me to achieve my dream. Thank you!” Hearing this, Ms Green smiled, her face wet with tears.

One possible version:

Suddenly a white envelope on the inside of the lid caught my attention. It must have stuck to the lid by accident, I thought. But then I noticed that the envelope was actually stuck on the inside of the lid, and someone had written the word “Congratulations!” on the front of the envelope, too. I opened the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper, “To the one who deserves to go,” the paper read, and inside of it was a ticket to the basketball game! I can’t believe it!—I’m the one that gets to go!
