A report says plastics are responsible for $13 billion in damage to the oceans and the undersea environment .        1        Plastic thrown away carelessly makes its way into rivers and other waterways.        2        After a while, it collects in the sea. And plastic never goes away. It just breaks up into smaller pieces over time. The oceans contain a lot of chemicals and other pollutants 3        That means harmful material may get into our food supply.

Plastic recycling programs also works—where old bottles and other plastics are collected, broken down and used to make new products. Are you doing it right? Writing a thank-you note.

I have always been a big advocate (拥护者) of thank-you notes. People will always think better of you for saying “thank you” properly.        1        For example, we can all send a electronic message. However, it is not the same as sitting down, putting pen to paper, getting a first-class stamp and sending it off in the post.        2        A thank-you note like this is less likely to get lost in the digital noise.

3        You are supposed to send your thank-you note as soon as possible after the event has taken place, or after you have received your gift. Christmas is the only occasion where you have a week or so to respond. Princess Diana supposedly started her thank-you letters before the event.

4

Don't start with “thank you”, because it is dull and predictable.       5       And then go on to the thank-you. The more kindness you have received, the longer the message should be. Try to make sure the stationery (文具) is fairly nice; some people use postcard-sized cards, so their notes are only a couple of lines long. If you are using paper, go for A5 and write a maximum of two separate pieces of paper. Never write on the back.

A. It meant she never forgot.

B. What is the best time to send it?

C. What occasions require thank-you notes?

D. In fact, that will mean a lot more to a person.

E. In modern times, we may have many choices.

F. It is natural to be thankful for the kindness of others.

G. Start something personal about the experience or gift.

Schools consume a large amount of energy, which has a bad effect on the environment. Whether you are a teacher or a student, there are lots of ways that you can help your school save energy.        1       Then you can band together with others to make an even bigger effect.

2       Even something as simple as turning off the lights when you leave a room can help to save energy. Turn off the lights in classrooms that are not being used and in other areas, such as empty bathrooms and unoccupied multi-purpose rooms.

Use natural light when the sun is bright. It may not always be necessary for you to have the lights on in your classroom. There may be times of day when the sun is especially bright enough for what you are doing in your classroom.       3

Set up a recycling station at your school.       4       It reduces the need to produce new materials. If your school does not have one, then ask your school principal if you can set one up.
