Daylight Saving Time is a way to make better use of thedaylight. The idea is to advance1 the clock by one hour sothat people will get up earlier and go to sleep earlier withshorter lighting time. Daylight Saving Time is oftenabbreviated2 DST.

History of Daylight Saving Time

Benjamin Franklin first suggested the idea of Daylight Saving Time.He got the idea while visiting France where people would get up earlierand go to bed earlier in order to save on candles. However, it was in 1895when the first modern day version of DST was proposed6 by GeorgeHudson in New Zealand. It was later proposed in England by WilliamWillet. In both cases the idea was dismissed7 by the government.

During World War I, the first country to implementDaylight Saving Time was Germany. They did it to save on coal8. Soon many other European countries followed. TheUnited States adopted9 DST in 1918.

In 2007 the United States extended10 Daylight SavingTime. This moved the start date three to four weeks earlier fromthe first Sunday in April to the second Sunday in March. It alsomoved the end date back one week from the last Sunday inOctober to the first Sunday in November.
