One city will go dark to protect birds
Starting April 1, Philadelphia is beginning a program called Lights Out Philly.Bird Safe Philly is asking building owners and people who live in the area to turn offall outside lights that aren’t needed between 12 o’clock in the midnight and 6o’clock in the morning, Pennsylvania Plst reported. So far, many of the city’s bestknownand tallest buildings will be taking part in.
The main goal of the effort is to help protect migrating(迁徙) birds. Many birds die along the way. Except the human actions, one of the biggest dangers comes fromthings humans have built. Experts say that one billion birds may die every year inthe US alone as a result of flying into tall buildings.
Other tall buildings, such as electricity lines and cell towers also lead to manybird deaths. Many migrating birds die because of getting confused(困惑的) by theglass and lights of buildings. The windows can reflect things like the sky or tree branches(树枝), which cause birds to fly directly into the glass. Bright city lightsadd another difficulty, because they think the lights are stars that guide them.
