The Goupitan ship lift in China's GuizhouProvince is the largest ship lift in theworld. It can lift ships with a displacementof up to 500 tons to a height of 199 meters.

Dams are characterized by a sharpchange in water levels and that makes navigatinglarge waterways a difficult task.Luckily， advanced technology makesthings a lot easier， and the Goupitanship lift is a perfect example. Completed in2021， it consists of three different hydrauliclifts （液压升降机） connected by navigablewater channels with a total distanceof 2.3 kilometers. Located on the WuRiver， a tributary （支流） of the YangtzeRiver in Guizhou， the Goupitan ship lift isone of the world's most fascinating technologicalwonders.

Each of the three lifts that make upthe Goupitan ship lift has a lifting capacityof 1800 tons and a lifting speed of 8 metersper minute. The Changjiang Institute ofSurvey， Planning， Design and Research decided to split the system into three differentstages in order to maximize boat transportationefficiency by reducing the risk ofcongestion （拥塞）. As soon as a ship getspast the first lift， another can be lifted，while the first ship continues its journeythrough the second and third elevators.

According to Stromag， a partnerbrand in the development of the world'slargest ship lift， “This design provides ahoisting （起重） speed of approximately 8meters per minute， so it can raise or descenda 500tonnevessel （the estimated averageweight of passenger boats） in 10 minutes，slashing the travel time used to passthe dam.”
