Recently, there have been huge advances in Ar⁃tificial Intelligence (AI) programs that create art. Theprograms, which create artwork based on short de⁃scriptions, have amazed many people. They have alsoraised difficult questions.
DALL·E 2, a tool from OpenAI, uses AI to cre⁃ate paintings, photos, and other artwork in many differ⁃ent styles based on simple descriptions. Since then, OpenAI has changed its rules to allowanyone to sign up and use the tool. But its still putting strong controls on the art that can becreated.
But now there are several other AI tools that work in similar ways. These new toolsare free or cheap, and dont have some of DALL·E 2s limits. Midjourney is a website thatallows users to create images from short descriptions. Stable Diffusion is similar, but userscan also run the program on their own computers.
The new tools are entertaining and powerful. They allow people to quickly see almostany idea they can imagine, even if they arent artists. For some creative workers, like thoseat companies that create ads or images, the tools allow them to quickly explore new ideas.
These AI programs can make strange mistakes. But with the right description, thetools are able to create images of just about anything in just about any style. Many artistsare upset that theyre now competing against computers for attention, prizes and jobs. Itshard for a single artist to compete against all the art and photography that has ever ap⁃peared on the Internet. In August 2022, a masterpiece created with Midjourney won firstprize at the Colorado State Fair. That upset many people.
The images and the descriptions used to train these AI programs were taken from theInternet. But the training images were used without permission. That has raised questionsabout whether what these tools are doing is fair or legal. Some people are starting to thinkabout the legal problems the artwork could bring.
