Bhatnagar has always loved reading.“Growing up, I was really shy, so I alwaysturned to books. They became my bestfriends when I didnt have one,”she said.
In 2019, when Bhatnagar was in hersecond year of high school, her dad suf⁃fered from cancer. The news was difficultfor the family. Books became an even big⁃ger comfort, and she started thinking aboutfamilies in similar situations. When her fa⁃ther recovered, she came up with a plan tohelp others. The idea came from the factthat there were kids who were facing thesame problem.
Then, Bhatnagar started a book drivein her hometown, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The goal was to collect books and givethem to kids being treated for cancer in lo⁃cal hospitals. Her father was not surprisedby this plan.“She always wants to dothings for the neighborhood,” he said.Since the start of the book drive, which shecalls For Love & Buttercup, Bhatnagar hascollected more than 10,000 books. Bhatna⁃gar had no idea how much attention herwork would get. She started by posting onsocial media, asking people in her area todonate.“I was expecting maybe two orthree neighbors to do it. But it ended upblowing up, especially when newspapersbegan reporting it,”she said.
Bhatnagar continues to run the bookdrive with her parents help. She hopes toone day make it reach more kids. Thememory of the first time she visited chil⁃dren whod received her books moved her.“It was the best day of my life. I realized Iwanted to do this type of work forever,”shesaid.
