No step, no mile

Even though the task or challenge ahead of us may look immense, it is actually completed with a series of small advances. It can never be completed unless we take that first step.

I can still remember the time when I was at a total loss because my head teacher asked me to organize a party. As a monitor, it was my duty but I didn't have such experience. I felt anxious because I was afraid of letting my teachers and classmates down. Fortunately, I turned to my mother who was a terrific TV host and asked her opinion about it. She offered me many good ideas. Ultimately, my efforts paid off and the party was a success.

Paragraph 1:

Finally, Michael touched something. A shoe, then an ankle—it was Tiara! He scooped her into his arms and stood. Turning, he fought through the smoke and made his way to the outside. Michael put Tiara down in the doorway. And he started CPR—the first time he'd ever done so. The women stood behind him, praying silently. Soon a slight cough came from Tiara's throat. He gave five more breaths. She open⁃ed her eyes and took a breath on her own.

Paragraph 2:

Tiara was safe; however, Michael fainted down to the ground, unconscious. When he woke up, Michael found himself in the hospital, surrounded by his neighbors who constantly said thank you to him. Michael spent over a week in the hospital. Tiara was released from the hospital after a few days. The fire sickened Michael's lung disease, and he felt the effects even two years later. “It's a small price to pay,” he always replies. “I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I wouldn't give it a second thought.”

Paragraph 1:

Tom and Tod hadn't gone far when there was a familiar bark. It was Paul, bounding anxiously in front of Tom. It barked shockingly at him and pushed him urgently toward the slope with its head. But the boy didn't get it. Turning to Tod, Paul gave some more fierce barks, and pulled Tod's jeans toward the same direction. The message was clear, but the boys were hesitant. Could they count on this old friend at this life⁃and⁃death moment? Would that be a mistake?

Paragraph 2:

Paul pulled again, in spite of the boys' disbelief, urgently. Seeing the fire was approaching nearer and nearer, the boys had no choice but to make up their mind. They followed Paul and rushed down the slope and into the depth of the forest. Several times the big dog stopped, lifted his head and sniffed the smoke⁃laden wind. Then it picked up the path to go on. They ran out of breath but did not stop until they heard the most melodious music—the sound of rushing water! At last, they made it back to the river. Saying nothing, exhausted Tom and Tod knelt down and hugged Paul tightly, with tears in their eyes.
