For most graduating students, the college‑admission season, usually in July andAugust, is a nervous time that is often described as a life‑changing moment.
Peng Lanxi, who was then an anxious 18‑year‑old, got his admission letter fromHunan University of Science and Technology on July 26, bringing his dream closer —makingprosthetic limbs (假肢) more advanced and accessible to people like him. His motherWang Chunmei couldnt hold back her tears because she knew how her son had overcomethe difficulties.
Peng Lanxi lost his legs in a car accident in 2005, when he was a baby. Havinglearned to walk using just his hands, he enjoys life as much as the teenagers around him.On his wheelchair, he plays basketball and badminton. Once a week, he goes for a40‑minute swim, and his best time for 100 meters is one minute and 15 seconds.
“I believe that obstacles (障碍) are there to be conquered. Someone says that life islike a mirror, and we get the best results when we smile at it,” Peng Lanxi says.
His story has gone viral (在网上快速传播) on a social media platform, which hasbeen viewed more than 19 million times and he won admiration from its users for his courage,determination and hard work. A user named Shuangpi comments that Peng lost hislegs, but he doesnt let that get in his way.
The official account of Hunan University of Science and Technology on the platformhas even commented,“ Welcome Peng to the university.” Lu Ming says that the school willhelp Peng to pursue his dream—to be a prosthetics engineer, a career that will changelives. Peng is not alone, as authorities have improved the presence of disabled people onmainstream campuses in recent years. 14,559 students facing physical challenges enteredcollege in 2021. From 2016 to 2020, about 57,500 special needs students were admittedinto universities, a more than 50 percent increase compared with the 2011‑2015 period.

The way in which you achieve your goals, face challenges, and overcome failures dependslargely on your levels of optimism. Not everyone sees life in the same way. 1
Change your negative thoughts. Your mind takes in negative memories and makesthem bigger and more significant than they really are. 2 The next step is to reducethem by comparing them to related or similar memories that are more pleasant. Repeat positive affirmations (肯定). One key element of increasing your levels of optimismthat you get with the previous two steps is positive affirmations. In fact, these messagesthat you repeat to yourself most regularly are the ones that you believe in and that determineyour vision of life. 4 You can start with one or two affirmations that representthe values you want to live by and the goals you want to achieve. For example, tell yourself“Every day I'm improving” or“ I'm living my best moment”. 5 Furthermore, it'll makeyou stronger in the face of them and you'll maintain your optimism.
