如何用英语表达“排名”

“排名”是我们日常生活中经常见到和使用的一个词，也是学术英语写作、英语四六级、研究生英语入学考试、雅思等图表作文经常要用到的表达。但很多同学往往苦于词汇贫乏，要么一筹莫展，不知如何表述，要么只会反复使用单一的rank。其实，英语中有关“排名”的表达非常丰富，掌握得好，不仅可以使语言表达多样化，而且可以为表述添彩。笔者根据日常积累在此归纳如下：

1. “排名第X”一般可以表达为“rank / place / position / come / come in / finish +序数词”，rank、place和position这三个动词也可以使用被动语态。需要特别注意的是，这里表示排名的序数词前不加定冠词the。例如：

He’s been ranked ninth among the best rappers in Africa. 他在非洲最佳说唱歌手中排名第九。

In the women’s sprint final， Kate Johnston placed first with a time of 10.93 seconds.在女子短跑决赛中，凯特·约翰斯顿以10.93秒的成绩获得第一名。

Denmark， which came in second， has also weathered the pandemic relatively well. 丹麦排名第二，也较好地经受住了疫情的冲击。

This school is positioned 28th in the QS world ranking of Art and Design Schools.该校在QS世界大学排名艺术与设计学科榜单中位列第二十八。

同时，使用动词rank、come或finish时，后面还可以接“in +序数词+ place（或position）”。例如：

Maine came in fifth place， with a median family income of $ 50，826 and a $ 69，850 cost of living. 缅因州排名第五，家庭平均收入为50，826美元，生活成本为69，850美元。

Exceeding 15.2 billion yuan in 2022， the brand value of Yantai apple has been ranked in first place among China’s fruit regional public brands for the 14th consecutive year. 2022年烟台苹果品牌价值突破152亿元，连续14年位居中国果品区域公用品牌价值榜首。

需要注意的是，finish一词一般多用于描述考试、赛事、竞选等，而非其他。例如：

In 2021， Wang Chunyu， the first Chinese athlete to reach the Olympic women’s 800 m final， finished fifth in 1：57：00. 2021年，作为第一位闯入奥运会女子800米决赛的中国运动员，王春雨以1分57秒00的成绩夺得第五名。

Some had been expecting Biden to finish a close second to Sanders in Nevada， but in the end Sanders got roughly twice the support than Biden did. 有人估计拜登在内华达州会以微弱差距输给桑德斯，位居第二，但最终桑德斯获得的支持率差不多是拜登的两倍。

此外，“排名第一”除了可以使用上述动词加序数词翻译外，也可使用come top或者“head/lead/top the list（或ranking）”。例如：

Switzerland has come top for the first time in the 33-year history of IMD’s World Competitiveness Ranking. 在IMD世界竞争力排名33年的历史中，瑞士首次位居榜首。

In 2017， Hangzhou led the ranking in terms of talent inflow rate and net inflow rate of returned overseas Chinese， named among the most attractive Chinese cities for foreign talents. 2017年，杭州人才流入率和海归人才净流入率位居榜首，入选“外籍人才眼中最具吸引力的中国城市”。

2. “排名前X”可以说“rank/place（或be ranked/placed）  the top +基数词”，也可以在动词和the top之间加上介词in或among。例如：

In terms of sales revenues， Samsung， LG Display， and China’s TCL ranked the top three with a market share of 30.2%， 17%， and 9.3%. 就销售收入而言，三星、乐金显示和中国的TCL名列前三，市场份额分别为30.2%、17%和9.3%。

还有一种表达就是“round out / complete the top +基数词”。但需要注意的是，这种表达的意思是这里列出的几个和前面提到的一起位列前多少名。例如：

Denmark leads the pack with Switzerland， Iceland， Norway， and Finland rounding out the top 5. 丹麦排名第一，与瑞士、冰岛、挪威和芬兰一起位居前五。

It is followed by the United States， Australia， Qatar， and Switzerland to complete the top 5. 紧随其后，排名前五的另外四国为美国、澳大利亚、卡塔尔和瑞士。

3. “挤进前X名”可以表达为“break into / make it to / enter / make / crack the top +基数词”。例如：

China’s homemade sci-fi blockbuster “The Wandering Earth II” broke into the top 10 at the North American box office in early 2023. 中国国产科幻大片《流浪地球2》在2023年初闯进北美票房收入前十。

Two other American metropolises also made the top 10—Los Angeles in fourth place and San Francisco in eighth. 另外两个美国大都市也进了前十：洛杉矶排名第四，旧金山排名第八。

Five Guangdong hospitals cracked the top 50 on the comprehensive ranking of Chinese hospitals in 2020 list. 广东有五家医院跻身2020年度中国医院综合排行榜前五十。

4. “跌出前X名”可以翻译为“fall/drop/slip/tumble outside （或out of）the top + 基数词”或者“leave the top +基数词”。例如：

Nanjing slipped out of the top 10 and ranked 11th this year. 南京今年跌出了前十，排名第十一。

In 2021， Canada tumbled out of the top 10 in the annual World Happiness Index. 2021年加拿大在世界幸福指数年度排名中跌出前十。

Switzerland topped the Global Innovation Index 2019 and Ireland left the top 10 and ranked 12th. 瑞士在2019年全球创新指数中排名第一，爱尔兰跌出前十，位列第十二。

当描述赛事时，动词同样还可以使用finish，表示“排在X名以外”。例如：

Last year he finished just outside the top 10， with the goal this year of finishing in the top three. 去年他差点进入前十，今年的目标是进入前三。

5. 如果要表达“上升X名”，可以使用动词climb、rise、move up、jump、leap加上“基数词+ spot（s）/place（s）/position（s）/rank（s）/rung（s）”，基数词前面也可以加上介词by。例如：

The University of Washington moved up two spots to No. 8 on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities rankings. 华盛顿大学在《美国新闻与世界报道》全球最佳大学排名中上升两位，名列第八。

Brazil jumped one spot to No. 3 while Argentina leapt two places to No. 5 in the latest FIFA world rankings announced on Thursday. 在周四公布的最新国际足联世界排名中，巴西队上升一位至第三名，而阿根廷队上升两位，排名第五。

6. “下降X名”则可以套用“drop/fall/slip/slide/move down + 基数词+ spot（s）/place（s）/position（s）/rank（s）/rung（s）”来表达。例如：

Mexico climbed four spots to 20th place among world football teams， while Chile slipped three rungs to 15th place. 墨西哥在世界足球队排名中上升四位至第二十，智利下滑三位至第十五。

Elton John and Dua Lipa， who topped the chart last week， slid one place to second with their single Cold Heart. 上周以合作单曲《冷酷的心》位居榜首的埃尔顿·约翰和杜瓦·利帕下降一名，排名第二。

“下降”也可以使用lose来表达，但一般只和上面除rung（s）以外的其余四个表示名次的名词连用。例如：

The rise of the Czechs and the Brazilians came at the expense of Russia， who lost two spots and dropped to 11th place in the FIBA World Ranking. 俄罗斯队在国际篮联世界排名中下降了两名，排名第十一，从而使捷克队和巴西队的排名上升了。

7. “排在最后X名”可以使用“rank （或be ranked） in/among the bottom + 基数词”来表达。例如：
