Wonder of the Night

Everything under the heavens1 lied still, engulfed in darkness. I slipped quietly into a dark forest2. Stars were silent, and so was the moon. Only a mountain stream groaned and moaned, splashing against the rocks on both sides, like a lone nightingale weeping.

At the top of the mountain stood an ancient temple. It appeared to be dangling amid white clouds3. The temple bell rang. Its heart-wrenching sound travelled haltingly through the cold forest. I leapt up, like a fierce tiger hit by a bullet, rushing from the foot of the mountain up to its peak. I craved a full life and freedom of the soul. But trapped in layers of darkness, everything seemed overcome with sadness. Oh my! Why did I love this dying world under the crushing weight of misery4? I dashed like mad back to the forest, took off my blood-stained outfit, prayed and repented to the stars, and cried.

Clouds stopped moving. Stars stopped twinkling. Creeks stopped sobbing5. Stillness reigned.

I ran through the forest6, and found myself on a beach facing a blue sea. Ah! It was here that this mysterious universe revealed its wonder!

As the curtain of darkness went up slowly, stars began to shine, radiating quiet charm. The moon smiled behind clouds, but seemed reluctant to saunter out7. White waves splashed against a verdant island in the distance. Faintly visible amid a sea of flowers displaying a riot of color were fairies singing and dancing, a testament to the vitality and beauty of life.

I was amazed and befuddled. How was it possible for something so miraculous to emerge in the darkness in the middle of the night?

In bewildered astonishment, I stood motionless on the beach, transfixed by the unbelievably beautiful sight, when all of a sudden, a huge, ferocious wave rose up from under the sea and engulfed the island. There was dead silence again.

I returned to the dark forest. Stars were silent, and so was the moon. Only a mountain stream groaned and moaned, splashing against the rocks on both sides, like a lone nightingale weeping8.

Alas! The universe is full of traps. No matter how I try, or how hard I struggle, any dream of a full life can only become an ephemeral reality that vanishes no sooner than it emerges9, devoured by vicious waves, and buried under the sea. Freedom of the soul is elusive like the wonder I experienced the other night. Our mortal world is characterized by filth and cruelty. Oh my! Why do I care about this dying world under the crushing weight of misery? I know one day I will perish in the fire of my own fury, casting away this worthless body to release my wretched soul.

I will then grab the North Star and toss it over our mortal world shrouded in darkness.

I will forever celebrate the wonder of the night.
