Procrastination1 May Harm Your Health
Meghan RosenProcrastination is putting off what you know you should be doing now to later, even if you’ll be worse off. But all those tasks pushed to tomorrow seem to hidethemselves into your mind—and it may be harming your health.
Though procrastinators2 may think they perform better under pressure, theyactually worked more slowly and made more errors3 than non-procrastinators.
We’re born to avoid anything painful or difficult. And a stressful environmentcan make procrastinating even easier.
Procrastinators can fall into a shame spiral4 where they feel uneasy about atask, put the task off, feel ashamed for putting it off and then feel even worse thanwhen they started.
Usually, the procrastinating students tended to be more stressed, anxious anddepressed5 than other students. The procrastinating people are at greater risk ofdeveloping both physical and psychological6 problems later on.
The effects7 of procrastinating could build up over time. And thoughprocrastination alone may not cause disease, it could be one extra factor that cantip the scales8.
The scientists have experimented with different procrastination treatments. It’shard to say what works best. You can try to improve your time management skills.
For some procrastinators, some clear tips can work. For example, simply putdown your smartphones. Silencing notifications9 or studying in the library ratherthan at home can help keep you on task.
Self-forgiveness10 may help, too. You made a mistake and procrastinated. It’snot the end of the world. What matters is what you can do to move forward.
