It was 1972, and my family had taken a summer vacation from Kansas toFlorida, with an exciting day planned at Disney World. My mother, stepfather andtwo younger stepsisters, along with my sixty-seven-year-old Grandma Betty andmyself, finally arrived at the holy grail1 of all amusement parks, and we girls werebeside ourselves with anticipation2.
To be honest, I think my grandma was, too. She hadn’t traveled much in herlife and certainly had never been anywhere as exciting as Disney World! Since wehad been there before, my mother had many things she wanted to showher mother, so off we went to get the day started.
After the second ride3, we all got off and got ready to stroll4 to the next one when one of us looked around andnoticed that Grandma Betty wasn’t with us. This was worryingfor many reasons, the most important being thatGrandma Betty had limited vision5 and couldn’tread signs well. She had also started toshow some signs of confusion6. Shecould easily find herself lost in her own hometown, not to mention “The Most MagicalPlace on Earth”!
