If you’re someone who likes to end the day by taking a book to bed, thenGladstone’s Library might be the best place for you. This is a library like any otherbut with an important difference—you can also sleep there. That’s right. It’s theUK’s only residential1 library. It is a paradise2 for book lovers, and you don’tneed to take only one book to bed—you can choose from 150,000!
The library is open to the public3 during the day, but for those who want toreally make the most of their reading, there are 26 guest bedrooms just meters fromthe books. The prices start at $145 per night.
The library was the idea of former4 British Prime Minister5 WilliamGladstone. He wanted his large collection of books to be made available6 to thepublic. So he moved more than 30,000 from his home to a temporary7 library in thevillage around him. By that point, the four-time prime minister was over 80 and hedidn’t live to see the opening of the residential library he had imagined8. But withhis books and money he left, the library was opened in 1889.
Now, the library welcomesstudents, writers, academics9 andthose who enjoy books. The onlyproblem is that many of the booksare old and precious10—maybelittle too precious to actually takeunder the covers!
