“四大名著”都有自己的经典英译本

《红楼梦》的英译本中，汉学家霍克斯的版本流传较广。霍克斯将《红楼梦》翻译为The Story of the Stone（《石头的故事》），在翻译书中一些经典名句时，他加入了自己的理解。如“两弯似蹙非蹙罥烟眉，一双似喜非喜含情目”，霍克斯译为：

“Her mist-wreathed brows at first seemed to frown， yet were not frowning; Her passionate eyes at first seemed to smile， yet were not merry. ”

目前公认的最贴近原著的《西游记》的英译本，来自学者余国藩。对《西游记》里一些大家耳熟能详的句子，余国藩给出了自己的翻译，例如：

“贫僧是东土大唐国奉旨意上西天拜佛求经的。”

“I am a priest from the Tang country in the East， and I am going to the Western Heaven to ask for holy scriptures.”

在《三国演义》的翻译上受到大家一致好评的是美国著名汉学家罗慕士。罗慕士是个标准的讲究人，喜欢抠字眼儿，他将“滚滚长江东逝水，浪花淘尽英雄。是非成败转头空。青山依旧在，几度夕阳红”翻译为：

“On and on the Great River rolls， racing east.

Of proud and gallant heroes its white-tops leave no trace，

As right and wrong， pride and fall turn all at once unreal.

Yet ever the green hills stay.

To blaze in the west-waning day.”

《水浒传》比较完整的英译本是约翰·登特-杨父子合译的The Marshes of Mount Liang（《水泊梁山》），由香港中文大学出版社于1994年至2002年分5卷出版。这是目前《水浒传》的英译本中唯一的120回的译本。
