Step 1:Lead-in. (2 minutes)
(Before class, enjoy some beautiful pictures of places of interest around the world.)
T:Good morning, boys and girls. Just now, we enjoyed some beautiful pictures of places of interest around the world. Do you like them? Do you want to travel to these places?
Ss: Yes, I do.
T:But can we travel around the world like before? Why?
S:No. We can’t travel like before because of COVID-19.
T:What should we do if we want to travel around the world?
Ss:We can travel around the world online.
T:Great! And I have good news for you. Our school will have a study tour around the world this summer. But we need a tour guide online. Would you like to be our guide?
Ss:Yes!
T:To be a good tour guide online is not easy, you need to finish the following tasks: learn to use the website; learn about the places to visit; use a better guided language and have a guide tour practice. Are you ready?
Ss:OK!
Step 2:Before travelling. (5 minutes)
Activity1: Read and find out basic information.
T:First, let’s try to learn to use the website. What is the name of it?
S:Around the World in Eight Hours.
T:What information can you get from it?
S:We can spend eight hours travelling around the world.
T:Great! So reading the title can help us get some key information.
Activity 2:Read and complete.
T:Boys and girls, what should we do first when we use the website? Now, please read paragrph1 & 7 and then try to fill in the blanks.
Step 3:While travelling .(25 minutes)
T:You did a good job. You have learned to use the website so quickly. I am really proud of you! Boys and girls, do you know which city we will visit today?
S: New York.
T:How do you know that?
S:I find out the answer from the picture on page 36. It says“You have chosen New York”.
T:Exactly! So reading the pictures can also help us get more useful information.
Activity 3:Read para.2-6 and fill in the chart.
T:Now, Let’s start online tour. How many places of interest can we see in New York?
S:Four.
T:What are they? What’s special about these places of interest? Please read Para.2-6 silently and fill in the chart.
Activity 4:Choose and complete the table.
T:What can we see there? What can we do there? Do you want to know more details about these places? Please read Para.2-6 carefully and choose the words to complete the table.
Activity 5:Thinking.
T:What’s your favourite places of interest among the four?
S:My favourite place is Time Square.
T:Why?
S:Because thousands of people gather there on New Year’s Eve. We can see the huge glass ball falling through the darkness. That’s very exciting.
T:Yes, that’s a good place for young people. What about you? Which place do you like best?
S:I like Central Park best. Because there are several lakes, hills and a large green lawn. People can relax there after a hard day’s work.
T:Such a wonderful place! Is it easy for people to live in New York?
S:I don’t think so.
T:Why do you say that?
S:From the phrase, a hard day’s work, in paragraph 5.
T:A careful boy! Well, boys and girls, do you know why is New York called the Big Apple?
S:Because New York is the biggest city in the USA.
S:Because New York is a beautiful city, just like a big apple.
T:How can we pick up the big apple in New York?
S1:Work hard to catch the chance.
T:Good! There are many apples on the success tree, but when you pick New York City, you pick the Big Apple. Big Apple means chance and success.
T:Why does the writer write the article? Boys and girls, please think it over!
S:The writer wants to introduce the USA to us. We can learn different cultures from the article.
S:We can learn more about New York.
T:Well done!
Step 4: After travelling. (13 minutes)
Activity 6:Appreciate the text and language.
T:Boys and girls, we have learnt about the places to visit. But do you know how to use a better guide language? Look at Robin’s introduction, do you think it is a successful introduction? Give your reasons.
S:Robin’s introduction is easy to understand.
S:His words are usually friendly.
T:Good job! Tour guide’s words are informal and interactive. They are usually friendly and easy to understand.
