Humans are very social creatures. In addition to verbal (言语的) communication, wealso use our bodies to help us better express our thoughts and feelings. This non⁃verbalcommunication is known as body language.
Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture (姿势).It had actually developed as a form of communication before humans could speak or write. We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.
In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are con⁃veying many messages to others every day without even using words. For example, youmight move your head from side to side to express the word“ no” instead of actually sayingthe word. Or, you might give a“ thumbs⁃up” to show that you like or agree with something.
But now that we are spending more time online, we may not have as many in⁃personinteractions as before. Because of this, our means of non⁃verbal communication havechanged, but it is still an important way to express our thoughts.
Our“ digital body language” is becoming increasingly important as we change how wecommunicate. Instead of using voice messages, we can video chat with our friends to showthem our smiling faces. Another way to express our emotions digitally is through emojis (表情符号). When we are communicating online, we are only revealing the content andleaving out tones and facial expressions. Thats why emojis can help in communication.
When using video chat to show our expressions or sending an emoji, don't forget theimportance of digital body language and non⁃verbal communication.

It happens all the time—you are standing on a bus, listening to music, when you feelsomeone’s breath on the back of your neck. You think to yourself: Is this person getting tooclose to me? The answer is yes. Everyone has a sense of personal space. 1
According to a new study, the size of the space is different for different people, 2 reported Los Angeles Times. In the study, researchers from University College London askedvolunteers to hold their hands at different distances from their faces. They then gave theman electric shock on their hands while measuring how often the volunteers blinked (眨眼).The more they blinked, 3
The results among volunteers were a little different, but the average personal spacewas 20 to 40 centimeters. Researchers also found that the more anxious a person was, the larger their personal space was because they were more sensitive.
Besides psychological factors, 4 For example, a person who grew up in a countrythat hugs a lot has less of a problem with strangers getting too close than a person who grewup in one with more distance between people.
5 “ If you are chatting to someone in your living room, you won’t have a largesafety margin (界限) at all,” explained researcher Gian Domenico Iannetti.“ But if you arewalking through a dangerous area, then that will be much bigger.” Sadly, sometimes peoplejust don’t understand the idea of personal space and keep getting into yours. Whenever thathappens, rather than trying to step backwards, researchers suggest that you“ create a newspace” by turning to wave at someone passing by or to get something out of your bag.
A. But how big is this space?
B. it shows that they are worried about their hands.
C. the more of a threat they felt the shock was to their faces.
D. but generally it is between 20 to 40 centimeters in front of the face.
E. culture is also thought to be able to change your personal space.
F. People’s senses of personal space also depend on the environments they are in.
G. It is clear that people’s senses of personal space are considered to be very important.
